Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the proposed independent Office of Inspector General and the campaign to amend the Prince George's County Charter.
What is an Inspector General?
An Inspector General is an independent, nonpartisan official responsible for investigating fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement within government agencies and programs.
Why does PG County need one?
Currently, oversight responsibilities are fragmented across multiple departments. An independent Office consolidates these functions into a single, unified watchdog to ensure comprehensive accountability.
Is this a new government agency?
No. The Office of Inspector General is a structural reform designed to consolidate existing audit, ethics, and accountability functions into one independent institution.
Who selects the Inspector General?
The selection process is two-tiered. First, a professional body verifies qualifications. Then, a separate citizen selection body conducts interviews and makes the final appointment.
How is the Office funded?
The Office will have a protected minimum funding floor of approximately 0.14% of the County's General Fund. This ensures the Office has the resources necessary for independent operations.
What can the IG investigate?
The IG has broad authority to investigate fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement. This includes oversight of County contracts, procurement, grants, and public programs.
How can I join the campaign?
Residents can join the coalition by visiting our website and completing a supporter form. We also welcome volunteers to help with petition gathering and community outreach.
